Letter to MSPs on Assisted Dying
Christian leaders from across Scotland have formed a united front urging Members of the Scottish Parliament to vote against the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill at Stage 3 later this month.
Among the signatories is the Rev Martin Keane, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, who said “Many MSP’s supported the bill as they hoped the decision would lead to serious debate and consideration. The Committee scrutiny if anything has weakened the safeguards suggested and has caused real concern amongst clinicians and those representing the vulnerable in society. The concession to limit the proposed scope to those with only six months to live flies in the face of the recent study that showed 50% of the time Doctors get it wrong! If this is enacted how many people and families will be robbed of precious time together out of fear of what is ahead? How many families will be racked with guilt afterwards? This proposed legislation represents a fundamental change to our healthcare system and as other countries have shown can rapidly progress from a right to die to a duty to die. Recent experience has shown that rushed and ill thought out legislation does not serve us well.”
