A short History of

Lossiemouth United Free Church

The United Free Church of Scotland was formed in 1900 with the union of the Free Church of Scotland and the United Presbyterian Church. In the 1920's negotiations took place for the union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland. The union took place on 6th October 1929. By the end of that year 130 members of what was St James' United Free Church in Lossiemouth signed a petition adhering to the United Free Church of Scotland (Continuing).

They wanted to continue their opposition to the recognition by the State of one particular denomination. They saw this as a threat to the spiritual independence of the Church and the evangelical position of the Church. They began worshipping as St James' United Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) on Sunday 2nd March 1930 and the Congregation was formally constituted on 15th December 1930. By this time they numbered 126.Lossiemouth UF Church

The Congregation was ministered to by a retired Missionary Rev Neil McKillop until his death in 1935. Rev George Lewis was then appointed to lead the congregation. At this time a site was obtained for a Church and this was built in St Gerardines Road. Just before the opening of the Church in 1937 it was decided that the Church would be known simply as 'United Free Church of Scotland, Lossiemouth.'

Mr Lewis was succeeded by Rev Duncan Gillies in 1937 who remained until retirement in 1946. Rev Alex Ross was called as minister in 1947 and in turn was called to Milngavie UF Church in 1950. It was during his ministry that a manse was bought to be replaced in 1955 by the present and larger manse in James Street. inside Lossiemouth UF Church

Rev John Adamson was called and inducted to the charge in 1951 and ministered faithfully until he was called in 1964 to West Calder UF Church. The Congregation built a hall in 1961 to better serve the congregations needs for organisations and outreach.

In 1965 Rev Donald Simpson was called and inducted as minister before going to Australia in 1969. He was succeeded by Rev James McIlwain of Bo'ness Craigmailen U F Church who was minister until his retirement in 1975. Rev John Sandell was inducted in 1976 and was called to Candlish/Wynd UF Church in 1988. The Rev Martin Keane was then called and ordained and inducted to the Charge in 1989.

In 2001 he was called to be minister of St Ninians United Free Church in Stirling. In May 2002 Rev Alexander Ritchie was called to be minister and was ordained and inducted on 11th May 2002. A new chapter in the history of the congregation has begun.
